“This is an exciting time for us as people and as artists,” explains Douglas Wooldridge of Tree Machines. He’s referring to the formerly Lawrence, Kansas-based duo’s decision to relocate to Los Angeles this summer. “This city is vastly different from the one where we grew up, but here we are, staring blankly into the sun, trying to get our feet under us.”

Following up Wooldridge and bandmate Patrick Aubry’s critically praised debut EP as Tree Machines from early 2015, the duo will now release three new stand-alone singles as they begin to prep a debut full-length. The first of these singles, set for release on August 7th, is “Summer Night,” a more pop take on the Tree Machines sound than previously heard.

“‘Summer Night’ is one of our most playful songs to date by far,” says Wooldridge. “It’s full of quirky guitar lines and stoned observations of late night wonderings in bar districts, following two hand-clasped lovers striving to keep one step ahead of this world.” Aubry continues the thought, explaining that “Summer Night” is the first Tree Machines track that he’s ever recorded on guitar, as Wooldridge and Aubry’s previous band incarnation had left him mostly relegated to playing bass.

“I’ve written plenty of songs on guitar,” he explains, “But no one was willing to shoulder the bass for the songs, so I had to pass the riffs on to the others. I suppose with the changing of the guard, it was only natural that I’d start expressing myself.”

In addition to “Summer Night,” look out for the new Tree Machines tracks “To Be Alive” on August 28th and “At Arms Length” on September 18th. Each single is accompanied by the fantastic artwork of Stephanie Medeiros, whose surrealistic visions perfectly capture the essence of the new Tree Machines songs in spectacular detail.

Then it’s on to recording the first Tree Machines album.

“The immediate plan for the future is to partner up with our producer Mikel Giffin and to get started on an album,” says Wooldridge. “An album that amasses to the enormity of our move to the coast.”

“It’s really is amazing to work alongside Patrick and Mikel,” Wooldridge adds. “Things click so quickly. We feel like we can almost do no wrong creatively, which is an incredible and freeing feeling to have as an artist.”

Tree Machines will also add a few new members to its live act, with plans play out during breaks in the album recording process.

“It’ll be exciting to fully get back on the road again,” says Wooldridge. “But first we need to get our bearings out in Los Angeles.”

Further explaining the band’s decision to go west, Aubry continues, “Leaving Kansas will probably turn out to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. But I needed it – it’s just too comfortable there. I’d be a fool to say that California has anything different, but at least I know that I won’t be stuck in the whirlpool of Midwest comfort and cheap living. At least I’ll know I tried, and if I fail, I can die happy. Plus, the beach is pretty awesome!”

Aubry sums up his outlook on the band’s future simply, saying, “It feels like we’re just getting warmed up. It feels like we’ve got so much more to write.”

Newly Los Angeles-based duo Tree Machines will release three singles this summer: “Summer Night” arrives on August 7th, “To Be Alive” on August 28th and “At Arms Length” on September 18th. A full-length debut album is in the works.
