Samantha Sidley’s version of “Waltz For Debby” is featured in the new film Sylvie’s Love starring Nnamdi Asomugha and Tessa Thompson. The Amazon Original is streaming now and getting rave reviews - it’s 93% fresh, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Sidley, “I had to learn ‘Waltz For Debby’ in Swedish. Jemima Kirke lip syncs to me about 12 minutes and 30 seconds in. A couple months later I was doing a casual at the Jonathan Club and an old man walked up to me asked, ‘Do you know ‘Waltz for Debby?’’ I was like ‘DO I!!!’” Hear her take now.

The girls who gathered for Samantha Sidley’s iconic “I Like Girls” video have all gone home, and now Sidley is all alone in the “Quarantine Edition” music video for the title track from her debut album Interior Person, named one of the Los Angeles Times’ “Best Albums of 2019.”
“I honestly had no idea quite how poignant this song would become,” Sidley says. “It was written as a positive twist or response, if you will, to the isolation that accompanies depression. The song has taken up a new meaning during the pandemic, which has pushed all of us to be more isolated physically and emotionally.”
Samantha Sidley chats with Forbes: “It’s beautiful that lesbians and gay people can listen to my songs and say, I needed this,” she says. Sam's debut album Interior Person is out now from Release Me Records. Listen to “I Like Girls” below.
What's "Butterfly In My Ass" about? Samantha Sidley's wife, producer, drummer, and co-writer of the song (with Alex Lilly), Barbara Gruska, explains: “My grandmother gave my grandfather a painting of a naked woman, which got passed down to my mom, and then to Sam and me. We went to pick it up, and there was a piece of paper at the bottom, covering something. I asked my mom about it and she said, ‘Apparently there’s a lewd sentence on the painting.’ When I unscrewed the frame and pulled the paper out, Sam and I giddily read the sentence aloud: ‘I have a butterfly in my ass.’ Jackpot!” Watch Sam perform it for Paste Magazine.
